NeoCon 2009

From NeoWiki

Here's the basic page for NeoCon 2009. It will evolve as time goes on and responsibility is distributed.

Check out the archived page of NeoCon 2008 for information about last years' Neoturbine Convention.

Who?

Break it down into 2-3 groups:

  • VIP
    • Out-of-towners (OOTs) and locals with moderate to high interest in Neoturbine and Neoturbine activities; have probably come in previous years (know the drill), 1st time and have been on IRC, or encouraged and willing to go along with this (few of these)
    • Paying ahead of time for the bundle of things we do + swag (shirt and whatnot) and helping us save!
    • Coming to most or all events
  • Normal
    • Most likely locals with low to moderate interest in Neoturbine; came in previous years and know the drill.
    • Will be encouraged to pay ahead at a cheaper rate or at prorated price after a cutoff date up to date of event we run. Can get on swag if they want to go VIP or through special program.
    • Coming to some events, most likely main ones
  • Guests
    • Oblivious to Neoturbine or not convinced enough to be either of the above.
    • Can pay at door if they show up to whatever event we run. Price will be prorated.

What?

Here are some key selling points and ideas so far. POST YOUR OPINIONS:

  • Meet and greet for OOTs; small tour of city perhaps
  • Visit to TML; Clarke's
    • Clarke's? Really? You do remember what happened last year? -- Eric
    • Clarke's? Do you forget what happened last time we brought a 'large' group with us and how much we had to pay? -- VitK
      • Good point, but this time around 1. we will get the usual # of people + couple OOTs because we are doing this before the BBQ 2. we can split up into smaller groups 3. decide after TML --DimaV 02:59, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
  • Visiting a gay club. Because that way we can creep the shit out of Vit.
    • You can go by yourself if you wish, but make sure you are awake for the BBQ the next morning --DimaV 18:57, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
    • This sounds gay --trevorj 8:02p, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
  • BBQ (Traditional NeoCon) in Lincoln Park (close to traditional NeoCon) for up to max allowable permitless # of people, with preset guestlist and not so heavy on food and crap (try to K.I.S.S. it)
    • Can we have more pre-planned activities for the BBQ? Like a loose schedule of sorts. A sports competition of some type. Anyone have a croquet set? -- Joel
      • We have *enough* preplanned activities -_- --DimaV 18:57, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
        • But no boat :( --sargas 00:06, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
  • Open party at the frat for Neoturbiners, supporters and friends. BYOB or pay at door. Invite by facebook and encourage them to ask us about other events.
  • I know people are probably traveling home on Sunday, but if anyone is still around in the morning or thereabout I would be up for doing some last thing. -- Joel
    • We considered a dinner in Chinatown. Highly likely. --DimaV 18:57, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
    • My flight isn't until 2 p.m. on Sunday; escort me to the airport? Eric 21:29, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
      • That's pretty "early" for partygoers :P. I am sure someone can come with --DimaV 18:57, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
    • Can I smoke in the frat / How much beer should I bring? rickb 12:24, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
      • Smoking inside the house is highly discouraged. It's summer anyway, do it outside. Bring as much beer as you wish, but keep an eye on it. --DimaV 18:57, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

When?

June 26-28

Current idea:

  • 26th
    • All of OOTs have arrived by evening, get time to rest
    • Last bits of shopping done, final planning
    • Possible tour of city, distribution of swag
    • 11PM - 2AM TML, Clarke's (pay out of own pocket)
  • 27th
    • 10/11AM - 4/5PM - Traditional NeoCon in Lincoln Park or similar
    • Time to rest and whatnot
    • 8/9PM - Whenever - big party at frathouse
  • 28th
    • Breakfast
    • Closing ceremonies
    • Leave

Where?

  • Lincoln Park
    • Will probably be OK if we got <50 people and don't look like we are selling anything, blasting loud music, looking suspicious
    • Without permit we might have to look for a spot for a while. I would expect most coming to this to be ready for this (ie: at the frathouse the night before). Fuck it tho, adventures are fun!
  • Frat
    • Place for OOTs to crash
    • Available kitchen and grill will allow us to keep food, grill, cook
    • Those living there over summer + our friends + others = big mixer party!
    • Alcohol ok, don't worry about cops
    • Drugs not allowed, period. -- lame

Why?

  • Why not?!?!

How?

  • Plan, but with the breakdown above + data from past years 1. not waste time too much making it work 2. not have to run around like crazy to keep it working and cheap
    • Forms to fill out soon to follow!
  • Collect money ahead of time, maybe even a month ahead for some things: cash, paypal, etc
  • Keep ideas going: get it done early, chill during!

Themes and Advertising

  • I am thinking of revolving around the following themes/ideas
    • Pirates - this has been a constant since neocon 3
      • Note Field Museum
    • 5/V/peace hand gesture/flicking the v's ()/hi-5 - reflects the fact that it's the 5th neocon, which has the roman numeral V....the rest are hand gestures related to those #s
    • Summer of Colors - could be our 'official' theme...I want people to dress up in very bright single-colored shirts (especially for TML)

T-Shirt

  • Shirts design updates will be posted here. Look for the one with the most recent date
  • Ideas/notes that go with the shirts so far (this should clear up some confusion):
    • Shirts are 90% likely to have a black design printed on your choice of bright shirt color (to contrast the text/graphic). Most likely candidates are white, yellow, cyan/bright blue, magenta/pink, lime green, orange, bright red.
    • A black shirt with white text will be an option as a limited edition that costs a bit extra. This is meant to discourage people from all getting the same thing, pay for having to get the white transfer and make it special. We might add something to it (like a signature).
    • Shirts should end up being about $10-15, or less.
    • The shirts are going to be more about NEOTURBINE and less about NEOCON.
    • Current front design is a reference to our tounge-in-cheek motto which we borrowed from Cheers a while ago. The bird is one of our symbols as well.
    • The back will contain a minimum amount of design so that it doesn't feel awkward when worn. Our url is to be featured, as well as some throwback to the NeoCon event.
