Restructuring NeoWiki
From NeoWiki
Contents |
[edit] Background
As we all know many large corporations are going through restructuring at the moment. Since we are no better (or worse) than these multi-nationals we have decided to join the bandwagon. This page was created to be used as a todo list. We're aiming for an organizational output like that of the Fedora Project Wiki. Sahal 19:36, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Fixing Specific Pages
[edit] Main Page
- make it look more like the Fedora Project Wiki
- make the left menu very detailed
- roadmaps
- lots of categories
- decrease the width
[edit] Categories for Consideration
- Website Documentation
- every new aspect of the new website that needs proper explanation should be documented. this might eventually lead to a manual for our site.
- General IRC Help
- setting up a channel, registering nickname, other day to day irc tasks
- for new users
- NeoRadio
- how to stream, re-stream using vlc, generating a playlist
- Miscellaneous tutorials
- how to pages indirectly related to IRC including virus removal, p2p, install linux, livecd use, humorous articles
- can also articles that have nothing to do with our network
- Running A Server
- Setting up BOPM, UnrealIRCd, etc...
[edit] BOPM
- The BOPM page is absolutely terribly organized, and basically needs
to be re-written from scratcha lot of work... Eric 17:03, 16 March 2009 (UTC) - "...you shouldn't be admining a server if you can't ./configure && make should you...it shouldn't take much explanation :P" - gonffen
- scanning legality section
- remove it! -- done
- general confusion on how to setup bopm
- move switch to user bopm -- changed the page so that this is unnecessary
- too many headings -- done changed to bold text
- headings unnecessarily specific
- use wiki trip quotes for bold instead of equal tags for headings
- headings unnecessarily specific
- too many asterisks -- didn't see this problem while editing the page
- not enough double asterisks
- & is unnecessary -- done
- bopm already automatically runs in the background
- can we drop the BOPM#restrict_CGI:IRC_clients_from_connecting_to_your_server section from the article considering it says right there that there's a better way to do it in unrealircd.conf
- i can add the information on how to do cgiirc protection in UnrealIRCd#Configuration Eric 00:47, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
[edit] UnrealIRCd
- local/network configuration don't need to be separated! - done
todo list:
-
configuration file samples and reality (pretty versions) - eric uploaded one-
All server links on the network use SSL and Ziplinks -
All servers also support SSL client connections on 6697; and preferably have 8067 available as an alternate port to the default of 6667
-
- The sample configuration, imho, is detailed/commented enough that all the above is self explanatory. -- Thanks eric ;)
starting- administrator guide
- maintenance
- don't share passwords
- use sha hashes
- use unreal's built-in
mkpasswdinstead ofsha1sumfrom your shell
- use unreal's built-in
- set masks realistically
- other tips/tricks
[edit] Neoturbine Convention (NeoCon)
- NeoCon2008
- these need to be archived
- done, i think... unless i missed something
- NeoCon 2009
- page has been created
- archive it
- i guess that's been done
- page has been created
- WinterCon (aka lintercon) has come and passed
[edit] Feature Requests
- remove impractical ideas
- add ideas that serve purpose
- expand on already included ideas with details on how to achieve goals
- import neowikiwishlist
- done
- this needs to be reorganized big time..
- neowikiwishlist doesn't fit into the page -- maybe it should be put on the top?
- too many headings -- this has been fixed
- should we remove items that could go in IRC_Server_infrastructure?
- Build Server
- Running Multiple Networks
[edit] Signing Party
- import the images from imageshack into neowiki
- done
- make the page simpler
- in terms of organization
- and language used
[edit] General Changes
[edit] styles
- the current default style has some problems. we need to either fix the css ourselves or find another great looking style to use.
- [1] describes just one of the many ways in which the current style is flawed.
- overflow of pre tags is not automatic.
[edit] Make the pages easier to understand for the general world population
- use simple English?
- f- the jargon
- less technical
- more concise
- need to read some documents on how to "publish for the web"
- aka "i dumb down for my audience to double my dollars..." Jay-Z
[edit] Learn to use NeoWiki like we use Wikipedia
- add the cool "this page has uncited links" and other seeming useless but practically useful boxes
- i just learned those are called templates.
- it seems the help page isn't as visible on the left menu as previously assumed
- needs to be bolded and red underlined :P
[edit] Conventions
- advocate direct action
- just do it
- "[do] it your self instead of asking the government why" - technique
- ask questions later
- we need a bunch of guidelines on how to create/edit NeoWiki pages
- Amazing discussion on style guides Pro/Con on the Floss Manuals Discuss mailing list
- please just talk inside the pages. do not talk on talk pages. :/
- any reasoning for this? Eric 20:20, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- you're right talk pages can be useful. i think that's true only if the page is basically completed or near completion. pages like this one don't really benefit from a talk page because we're using them to talk. Sahal 16:38, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- any reasoning for this? Eric 20:20, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- turn the inline external links on all pages into citations instead
14:09 < stiv2k> present it in a easy to follow, flowing manner 14:09 < stiv2k> top-bottom approach
[edit] Namespaces
Why do we have multiple namespaces? This really confuses me. Can we combine all of these? Sahal 21:01, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
